International University of East Africa (IUEA) opened their 2026/27 Pepsi University Football League campaign with a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Bishop Stuart University (BSU) at Kasanga on Tuesday, thanks to an 85th-minute winner from Miodi Aksam.
Coached by former Uganda Cranes defender Hassana Wasswa, IUEA wasted little time in asserting themselves. Paul Mubiru latched onto a clever pass from Primo Iwroth and found the net in just the second minute, sending the home supporters into raptures.
The early goal set the tone for a fiercely contested encounter. BSU, refusing to be rattled, gradually grew into the game and pushed hard for a leveller, but the hosts defended their narrow advantage with discipline and determination for much of the afternoon.
Aksam Doubles the Lead
With five minutes left on the clock, IUEA finally carved out some breathing room. Aksam was perfectly positioned to tap home Gift Mutalya's inviting cross in the box, doubling the lead and seemingly sealing the contest.
Yet BSU had other ideas. Vianney Sabiiti pulled one back in the 89th minute, restoring hope and setting up a tense, nerve-jangling finale.
IUEA, however, stood firm under late pressure to claim all three points, handing Wasswa a winning start to his campaign in front of an appreciative home crowd.
What's Next in the UFL
The action continues on Wednesday, with 2019 champions Uganda Christian University hosting Busitema University in Mukono.
This season's tournament features a total of 31 universities, split into three groups. The top two teams from each group, along with the two best third-placed sides, will progress to the quarter-finals.
For IUEA, the result is a promising foundation on which to build. For BSU, the late fightback offers encouragement despite the defeat. Both sides will be eager to make their mark as the campaign unfolds.
