The controversy surrounding Makerere University's 2026 Freshers' Ball has deepened after the Guild Minister of Culture, Mobilisation and Social Affairs, Mutebi Edward, tendered his resignation, citing irreconcilable differences with the 92nd Guild leadership.
In a letter dated November 2, 2026, and addressed to Guild President H.E. Kadondi Gracious, Mutebi announced he was vacating his ministerial office with immediate effect.
Disagreements Over Event Planning
At the heart of the resignation lies the organisation of the Freshers' Ball, held on October 31. Mutebi accused the Guild President of meddling in the event's programme and undermining the work of his ministry.
He claimed that both the Guild President and Vice President had been absent from planning meetings that brought together the Dean of Students, the security team and sponsors. According to the outgoing minister, the President arrived late at the event accompanied by family members and friends, and then attempted to take the entourage backstage without the required accreditation.
Mutebi said the situation deteriorated when the Guild President allegedly tried to take to the stage ahead of the agreed programme. That move, he said, sparked a disagreement involving security personnel, sponsors and a guest artiste. He described the episode as embarrassing and placed the blame for the ensuing confusion squarely on the President's conduct.
A Record of Achievements
Mutebi, who was sworn into office on April 15, 2026, used the letter to recount what he considers the high points of his tenure. He listed partnerships with Made in Uganda, a headline sponsorship for the university bazaar, the return of Coca-Cola after an absence since 2022, and the organisation of the FIFA World Cup watch party and the Freshers' Ball. He also credited his ministry, working with Mary Stuart SCR, for reviving movie nights on campus.
The outgoing minister thanked his deputy, Hon. Nuwusasira Mercy, Chairman Ojambo Romerus of Nsibirwa Hall, and Nahurira Derrick, whom he described as a friend and loyal aide. He also expressed gratitude to the university administration and fellow student leaders.
However, he did not hold back in his criticism of the Guild President, accusing the office of claiming credit for work not done, frustrating the ministry's activities and placing personal interests above those of students.
"The Freshers' Ball was the last straw for me. I leave your cabinet gladly with my dignity intact. I go with a cheerful heart, richer in friends and experience," Mutebi wrote.
University Responds
The resignation comes as scrutiny of the October 31 event intensifies. The ball drew public attention after an incident involving a former student whose conduct sparked widespread discussion on social media.
On November 3, Makerere University issued a statement expressing concern over the incident and distancing itself from behaviour it said undermined the values and standards expected of the university community. The institution also announced an immediate review of security and event management protocols for university-sanctioned social events.
